2. Porters Chair 

Our Porters chair in silver or gold wood finish is part of our bespoke seating range. This chair can be made to your specifications from our wide selection of quality fabrics, or you can supply your own fabric to add a more personal touch.

Porter’s Chairs were first seen in medieval France and then in England. They were used by the front doors of grand homes for the servant to greet visitors and guests. This was because the door knocker could not always be heard all the way around the home.

Porter Chairs wrap around the person seated to minimise the effects of chills and draughts (very usual around front doors at the time) whilst they sat for often long periods of time. Even servants needed to be kept warm!

They are also sometimes referred to as Hood Chairs. Many original chairs from the period included notches at the side to hang a lantern. The high back, hood, and armrests allowed the gatekeeper to sink back into the chair in comfort and warmth.
